Who is Non -Resident
Non-Resident Indian (NRI) means a person resident outside India and is a citizen of India. Thus, an Indian citizen who stays abroad for employment / studies, carrying on business or vocation outside India or stays abroad under circumstances indicating an intention, for an uncertain duration of stay abroad is a Non Resident Indian.
An illustrative list of NRIs:
Indian citizens who have gone abroad for purpose of Job, profession, vocation, studies etc.
Indian citizens having employment in Govt. Of India/State Govt. /Semi Govt. organizations/PSUs etc. and posted on deputation abroad.
Indian citizens having employment in international agencies like UNO, IMF, UNESCO, WHO, World Bank etc and Indian Embassy, High commission, Indian Consulate etc.
Foreign citizens who are persons of Indian origin.
Crew member of Indian airlines/Air India/Shipping Cos. who are posted abroad.
Indian citizens employed as crew members abroad by foreign airlines, shipping lines etc.
Indian citizens going abroad are treated as Non Resident Indians provided their stay abroad is for more than 182 days in the preceding financial year and their intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period.
Person of Indian Origin (PIO)
Person of Indian Origin means a citizen of any country other than Bangladesh or Pakistan, if:
- Who was a citizen of India by virtue of the Constitution of India or the Citizenship Act, 1955.
- Who belonged to a territory that became part of India after the 15th day of August,1947.
- Who is a child or a grandchild or a great grandchild of a citizen of India or of a person referred to in clause (a) or (b).
- Who is a spouse of foreign origin of a citizen of India or spouse of foreign origin of a person referred to in clause (a)or (b) or (c)
